Bach Cantata: Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme
About this event:
Hear a historical work sung in a historical space by choir, soloists, and orchestra: Central Presbyterian Church presents the Bach cantata “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” as part of its 10:30am services. Sung in German with English supertitles.
Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme is one of the most popular of Bach’s church cantatas and is reminiscent of baroque opera in style. The 25-minute work was written in 1731 for the final Sunday before advent, and, as with all of Bach’s sacred cantatas, was composed to be sung as part of the church service. The two love duets, sung by soprano and bass, explore baroque spiritual mysticism as a dialogue between Jesus (bass) and the Soul (soprano).
