The Chancel Choir is a non-auditioned choir of adult and high-school aged singers as well as 4 professional singers / section leaders that sing weekly from September through May in Sunday morning services. The choir sings a wide variety of music, including contemporary gospel music and spirituals, classical music, and newly composed pieces. The choir presents several major works with orchestra throughout the year, and over the past five years has sung 4 Bach cantatas (Wachet auf; Nun komm der Heiden Heiland; Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele; Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit), works by Henry Purcell (Funeral Music for Queen Mary and Funeral Sentences, and Stabat Mater) and Arvo Pärt (Summa and Stabat Mater), and Maurice Duruflé (Requiem).
In 2016, the choir began a partnership with People’s Presbyterian Church, Denver’s historical African-American congregation, and presents concerts and combined services throughout the year.
The choir is open to all without audition or previous musical training, with weekly rehearsals on Wednesday from 7:00-9:00pm in the choir room, and at 9:30am on Sunday morning in the sanctuary. The choir does not rehearse or sing in services from June-August.
The house band is an ensemble made up of professional musicians that accompanies the choir once per month and plays for outdoor services and special events. The ensemble primarily plays gospel, soul, and folk music, but also performs 80s and 90s rock at our live band karaoke events and jazz at our art openings. The group rehearses on from 8:00am-10:15am on the Sunday mornings in which they play in service.
The summer choir sings in services from July-August from 9:30-10:15 and is open to all. All music is learned on the morning in which it is sung. The summer choir is offered as a great, low-commitment way to experience choral singing.
