Reflection

At the end of every Easter service, every year, I am that bunny in the video. I think that most church musicians and pastors can relate—the hustle and bustle of preparations, making sure that everything is perfect going into Easter morning, can be taxing to say the least. Though we all know from experience that most of the added guests at our services won’t come back the following Sunday, we think that if just everything is perfect, perhaps they will.

And it never is—there’s a note missed here or there, and I, as a perfectionist, notice every one. But thankfully the good news of the Risen Lord is that we don’t need to be perfect, can’t be perfect, and that we’re not even expected to be perfect.

So in the early afternoon after the Easter service is over, and after an hour or so of deep reflection on the morning’s service (read: staring blankly at the wall or, worse, Facebook) I’ll find my way to this video art piece, laugh, and continue on my day.

Prayer

Let us be comfortable in all of our beautiful imperfections, knowing that perfect love can only come from you, the Risen Lord.
